I am reading a fabulous book (Eat pray Love) a friend lent me that is so remote from the context of this blog but had a little snippet in it that made me almost fall of my subway seat with laughter that is related!

Do you know the origin of the word Ciao?..the one used to say hello, goodbye, see ya later

The word derives from the Venetian phrase s-ciào vostro literally meaning “I am your slave“. Of course it is not meant to be interpreted literally….more along the lines “if you ever need my help, count on me.
