This is an old story but I only just saw it now. Apparently back in the late 90s The Body Shop ran this fantastic ad series called the ‘Love your body’ campaign in the UK, whose underlying proposition was to challenge and stimulate public debate on female self-esteem and to position The Body Shop’s ethical policy in this context. Meet Ruby, short for Rubenesque. YAY Body Shop!

The campaign was a success and it was sent also to the rest of Europe, Australia, Asia and America. Barbie’s manufacturer, Mattel, sent The Body Shop a cease and desist order after posters featuring Ruby started appearing in American shop windows. Their reason: Ruby was making Barbie look bad. This banned advertisement was also forbidden to be hung up in the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway. The complaints included her “nude and nippless figure” being exposed to the public which offended people in China.

Ruby earned the nickname “Anti-Barbie”. You should be embarrassed Mattel and the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway. In the last 20 years, fashion models have gone from a size 8 to a size 0, when the average American woman has gone from a size 10 to a size 14. How warped is that?  How am I suppose to feel with my size 20 looking at a 0 model add? Let’s look at some stats and do a photo comparison of a real woman with some of Barbie’s measurements.

REAL WOMEN
Average woman’s height is 5’4″
Their weight is approx. 140 lbs.
They wear a size 14 dress
Their bust is between 36″ and 37″ (B cup)
Their waist is between 30″ and 34″
Their hips average between 40″ and 42″
Their shoe size is estimated to be between 8.5 and 9.5
BARBIE
Barbie’s height would be 7’2″
Her weight would be 101 lbs.
She would wear a size 4 dress
Her bust would be 39″ (FF cup)
Her waist would be 19″ (same as her head)
Her hips would be 33″
Her shoe size would be a 5

Here is a mock-up of Barbie’s human size proportions next to a real average woman. I am sorry but that looks more like a freak Alien.

This picture below is also a shocking look at reality. On top you have an actual plus size model, Nancy Hayssen,  which looks about like me. Below is an actual photo shoot of the brave Isabelle Caro, former fashion model, who died at the age of 28 from anorexia, she weighted 60 lbs. Stats report that in women between the ages of 15 and 25, 1-2% have anorexia and 3-5% have bulimia. So look at the picture below and tell me which of the two you think is beautiful and healthy?

I have been overweight my whole teen/adult life. Yes I do suffer from self-esteem issues due to my weight but I have never ever let it stop me from showing my body. I look at thin woman’s bodies in the changing room at the spa or the skimpy dressed ladies at fetish events and I take a small self-destructive beating on the inside.

But it is at that moment that I give my self a imaginary slap in the face: I drop my towel and show my body in the changing rooms; I clearly make sure my online courtiers are aware that I am a Queen BBW in a non shameful way; I go to any public event in a swimsuit without a cover up; I have never in my life made love with the lights off and always display myself fully to my lovers; and now that I am discovering a bit of an exhibitionist side I go comfortably to BDSM events dressed, like below, feeling hot and sexy. What ever size you are, love yourself, be nice to yourself and concentrate on health instead of looks.

Now that is fucking hot, no?

  5. I love this post. And I hate what Barbie and all the media is teaching our young girls. One of my cousins’ girls is a beautiful size 10. Or was. She felt the need to diet, to fit in, at a mere 15. She was a size 10 and probably 5’6 or 5’7″. She had a little bit of curves here and there and once upon a time was ever so slightly chubby. I tried so hard to tell her one day, when she was unfairly comparing herself to her older sister (who is more like 5’1″ and a size 4, very boyish). How hard I tried, in vain, to express that curves are beautiful, that she is never allowed to call herself fat nor is anyone else, that she is beautiful exactly the way she is.

I feel like I failed a little when I heard she was dieting and dropping sizes. It broke my heart. She’s happier and feels more secure in herself, which is good…I hated to see her with low self esteem. I just wish the confidence didn’t have to come with a side of unnecessary dieting. at 15.

  7. you are beautiful and soo incredible sexy. Being about the same size as you I really appreciate this article and love the barbie comparisons. :) )

I am a bit of an exhibitionist and find that maybe plus size beauty is not an attraction for everyone, just as thin is not an attraction for everyone. I have found a following who very much enjoy the way I share myself with them. I am always going to battle my weight to maintain a sexy appeal and balance of health and I’m ok with that. I’m not looking to be a size 4 only to be able to see in myself the sexy that others find. :)

    Thank you for such insight.

  11. This is the second great post I have read in the last week or so surrounding this subject. If you are interested you can find the other one I read at http://ladygrinsoul.blogspot.com/2011/06/fat-issue.html

I completely agree with you, and I guess in many ways these issues surrounding woman’s self images also fits in with my pussy pride project which is trying to show woman that no matter what their bits look like they are beautiful because they are all a unique part of them and should be cherished and celebrated as such and this goes for our whole bodies too. Sexy is not about being thin, in fact sexy is as much a way you think about yourself as it is the way you look…..and yes, you do look very sexy in that picture.
